Tips for Fishing Golden Dorado
Here are some tips from local guides in Uruguay and those that have spent their life around the dorado and the rivers of Uruguay.
Bait Casting - Spinning
The majorityof dorado fishing is done using bait casting or spinning gear. The size and variety of the fish is not hampered.
The minimum line is a 20 lb test line and lures up to 6 inches in length are used. Anglers should always pack a backup outfit as the dorado like to fish and we have seen some anglers that were almost beat by the dorado in Uruguay!
Braided lines are advised, and one reel spooled iwth 40 lb mono works well in the waters of Uruguay.
Trolling
The river is very deep in some areas and currents can be strong in other areas. We do fish in these areas as our Uruguay fishing guides are professionals who know the waters. Special techniques are required to reach the golden dorado and the use of diving plugs brings fishing success.
Fly Fishing
Top water fishing uses 3 to 5 weight rods, while 9 to 10 weight rods are recommended for the heavy 400 grain sinking lines, steel leaders and large weighted streamers.
